Terror Management Theory (TMT)

TMT is a theory that scientists have produced to explain why certain people believe in religion. Scientists suggest that religion serves as a coping tool to help people handle the terror of death. Believing in an afterlife cushions the uncertainty of what lays ahead. These beliefs thus help people feel capable of making long term plans, and suppresses this fear of death with a “convenient” explanation that allows them to function in their day-to-day lives.
Allah has already told us that through faith in Him we can find peace of mind:
“Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest!” {13:28}

Intriguingly, note what the alternative to God is in order to manage fear of death? It could be obsessing over the dunya in order to succeed here, (as it is the only world and only life). It may even be to develop depression or anxiety over the futility of life. It’s likely that some may become selfish, greedy, materialistic, and competitive in order to get ahead.

Muslims take no shame in drawing comfort from faith in Allah. Alhamdhulillah for Islam
